Headed to Australia to battle Coalition warships in the area, she raided merchant shipping off the US East Coast before making a jaunt in to the Caribbean. Aircraft carriers are basically floating airbases, transporting, servicing, launching planes into combat and recovering them, providing readily available air support to the naval fleets under their charge. One of the first combat actions of the Vaterland class was the raiding cruise of the battleship Nassau. Eventually, a length of more than 900 meters was settled on, with a beam of 90 meters to maintain stability. This gave the new warship better seakeeping and dryness forward, a valuable trait in the stormy Atlantic. One of the first major changes made compared to ships like the Lützow was to change from a straight bow, to a more flared "Atlantic bow". Klink soon realized however that a new hull was needed, one far larger than any current non superwarship in the German fleet. To remedy this "battleship gap", Wilhelm Klink began work on designing a new ship derived from the Lützow class. Development of the Vaterland class began with the realization that the current heavy battleships in the fleet were often outclassed by the heavier Coalition warships. ![]()
